‘In the sandbox’ Kentavius Jones, Sam Pugh and Oh, He Dead play the Avalon
EASTON — Of everyone on the bill Wednesday night at the Avalon Theatre, Kentavius Jones had the easiest load-in. He lives two blocks away. Jones and his longtime musical partner Sam Pugh opened for Oh, He Dead, a genre-hopping soul, R&B and jazz band from the D.C. area. They played to a room full of family and friends, plus the entire staff of a downtown Easton restaurant, Tiger Lily, which closed for the night so its crew could go. “How cool was this, that we filled this room on a Wednesday?”, Jones said after the set last week. For Jones, a hometown show was personal with a short drive, his brother in the crowd and friends in the audience. But it was also a bit of a mission. Jones sits on the Avalon’s board, and he said the show grew out of an effort to bring independent, emerging artists and a younger crowd into the historic theater. The thinking, he said, is simple: book talented acts early, and when they hit it big, they’ll want to come back. Jones had originally planned a solo acoustic set. Then Pugh turned out to be free. Design with Jenn Martella: Georgian Splendor, c. 1938
King George III may have lost the American colonies, but his name lives on in the popular Georgian architectural style. This stately home in Easton’s Historic District beautifully illustrates elements of this style: its two story, two rooms deep rectangular shape; side gabled roof; decorative cornice with dentil molding; double hung 6/6 windows; centered entry door with an elaborate entablature above decorative pilasters; and windows aligned both horizontally and vertically in symmetrical rows around the center front door.

Waterfowl Festival launches new duck scavenger hunt
EASTON — The Waterfowl Festival is hosting something new this year — a duck scavenger hunt at locations across Easton, St. Michaels, Cambridge and Denton. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 15, participating vendors are placing large wooden ducks right outside of their buildings. Minnesota artist Tom Duffy hand-carved 20 big ducks and around 50 small ducks for the duck hunt. This year, all of these ducks have already been purchased by partner merchants. To add to the excitement, some local businesses have decorated and painted their ducks. The duck hunt, an idea suggested by Waterfowl Festival Board member Dan Ketelson, aims to get merchants more involved in the festival. Waterfowl Festival and Administrative Coordinator Annie Miller reflected that the original goal was, “to get all of the merchants excited beyond just downtown Easton and get them involved on a deeper level, because [the] Waterfowl Festival brings over a $6 million impact to the community.” The scavenger hunt also allows merchants to get on the Waterfowl Map at an affordable price. This initiative will reach out to small businesses that cannot afford to get a big vendor booth, but are excited about being part of the Festival. For locals and Waterfowl
