Democrat Jesse Huseth unseats GOP incumbent for TN House District 97

Democrat Jesse Huseth has unseated incumbent Republican John Gillespie to claim the Tennessee House of Representatives District 97 seat . Huseth, a business owner and former teacher, also ran for the seat in 2024 and lost to Gillespie by about 3.5 percentage points. The district includes portions of Cordova, East Memphis and Shelby Farms Park. After the race was called, Huseth told The Commercial Appeal he was proud of the race results and didn’t expect to be as far ahead of Gillespie as he was when early voting numbers came in. He said the flipped seat is “a win well-earned for Memphis” and is excited to be what he said is a more visible presence of state government in the city. “The state government should act as both a bridge and a buffer from the federal government,” he said on Nov. 3.Huseth said he will prioritize three issues as he starts his work in the statehouse: funding public education, eliminating the state grocery tax and increasing access to health care.
