LSU will attempt to build its case for an NCAA Tournament bid when they begin a three-game series against Alabama tonight. The Tigers are coming off a big series win against the previously number one ranked team in the country, Texas A&M.

While Alabama is 30-18, 10-14 in the Southeastern Conference. The Crimson Tide have been on the road the last two weekends, losing last weekend in Starkville, but winning the prior series in Oxford.

This could be an offensive series. Alabama is one of the top hitting teams in the SEC with a team batting average of .308. They have the fewest strikeouts in the SEC with 332.

But they’ve struggled on the mound with a team ERA of 5.58. The Tide’s three starting pitchers for this weekend have an ERA above four.

Bama’s best position player is Gage Miller. The junior college transfer from Bishop State Community College in Mobile leads the team with a .383 batting average, 18 home runs and 48 RBI.

Left-handed hitting TJ McCants, a transfer from Ole Miss, has also been very good. He’s hitting .312 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs.

The goal for LSU is to win at least four of the final six conference games. That will get them to 13 league wins, which could be enough to get them in the NCAA Tournament.

The latest Regional projections from Baseball America and D1baseball have the Tigers on the outside looking in, so there’s still more clutch hits to get and clutch pitching needed for LSU.
