TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Summer construction projects have begun at the University of Alabama, leaving a number of roads closed on campus while students are away on break.

Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner is weighing in on the $26 million major construction project, calling it a big deal for UA and for the city of Tuscaloosa.

“The aesthetics and beauty of it matters, and I don’t think you can visit any other campus that can compare to the University of Alabama, and its very important to us and our economy,” Tyner said.

UA Vice President Tim Leopard says  some of the construction work includes rerouting some of the sanitary sewers, replacing critical water lines, improving roadways, adding new landscaping, new lighting and new bike paths to name a few.

UA student Shelby Perkins says it is frustrating having so many roads closed and dealing with detours, but in the long run she appreciates what the administration is doing to improve and add beauty to the campus.

“It can definitely be a hassle with all the detours and stuff, but Dr. Bell and the campus does a really good job taking care of the students and building new sidewalks. And new roads makes it better for all the students that are here. And in the long run these projects are so worth it making our campus better,” Perkins said.

UA officials are expecting the construction work to be finished before students return for classes next fall.
