TULSA, Okla. — One person has died and a nearby school was put on lockdown after a shooting at an apartment complex in west Tulsa.
A standoff that lasted hours ensued following the shooting, but police confirmed the man accused of shooting and killing the victim is Brent Austin Dean and he was eventually taken into custody.
Dean was booked into Tulsa County jail without bond for two counts of pointing a deadly weapon, shooting with intent to kill and first-degree murder.
Police said around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday they responded to multiple calls about a shooting at an apartment complex near 17th and Southwest Boulevard.
When officers arrived, they found a female shooting victim inside an apartment and rushed her to the hospital, but she has since died from her injuries.
Police said the victim's name will be released once all of her family has been notified.
According to police, the suspect wouldn't get out of the apartment, leading to a standoff that lasted hours. FOX23 was on scene and saw the large police presence and SWAT teams on scene.
"Patrol officers were here. We got the place surrounded, we started giving verbal commands on the PA system. We talked to him on the phone a few times, he told us he's not coming out," Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg said.
The heavy scene put a nearby school, Eugene Field Elementary, on lockdown. Tulsa Public Schools lifted the lockdown once the suspect was in custody.
FOX23 Crime and Safety Reporter John Asebes lives nearby where the shooting happened. He and several others found the woman moments after she was shot.
John said he woke up to five gunshots, ran outside and saw the woman. He said it was gut wrenching and one of the hardest things he's seen in his life.
The family of the victim told FOX23 that her name was Myrna.
Tyler Mann is a resident of the Waterside Apartments and was one of the multiple people who called police.
"Then I saw a man over here who happens to work for FOX23 and we were discussing it. We decided to walk the area and see what we could find and make sure nobody was hurt. After a minute of walking we walked directly into the victim who was laying in the doorway of her apartment," said Mann. ""There was blood everywhere, she was covered in blood especially in the shoulder area."
John said he met Mann after hearing the gunshots early in the morning and they found the woman lying in a breezeway.
"She was moving her head kind of slightly. I was talking to her to stay with us, stay with us. we had cops on the way because we had called 911," Mann said.
Another woman was also there helping the victim and calmly trying to tell John information that he could then tell police that would later help them in their investigation.
John recounted some of what he was feeling in a Facebook Live shortly after the shooting.
John said multiple people have shared their thoughts about her on Facebook sharing their grief about how great of a neighbor she was and what a sweet person she was to everyone.
FOX23 has also learned from courthouse officials that she worked at the Tulsa County Courthouse for years and was beloved.
John said what he and Mann saw on Wednesday morning is something that they will never forget.
"It was really hard seeing that and seeing her struggling and not being able to do anything. I will probably feel guilty about that for awhile," Mann said.
We are working to get more details and will update this story when we learn more.
FOX23 made contact with the family of the victim who are understandably upset and from what John gathered, they had concerns about that neighbor for days now.
FOX23 is working on setting up a day in the future to speak with them and will provide further updates as they become available.
