Where Memphis landed in college football polls after Week 6, win over UAB
Memphis football keeps winning , and the Tigers are back on the radar of the top 25 polls. The Tigers (5-1, 2-0 American Conference) beat UAB 38-13 on Oct. 10 . It was their third-straight blowout win, and it led to votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll for the first time since Memphis lost to Boise State on Sept. 12. Memphis received six voting points in the poll that was released on Oct. 11, meaning the Tigers landed at essentially No. 38 in the poll. Memphis did not receive any votes in the AP Poll. Boise State was the only ranked Group of Six team at No. 24. James Madison, New Mexico, UTSA and Oregon State also received votes. Memphis has looked along with UTSA like one of the two favorites to win the American Conference title. But the Tigers are still facing an uphill climb to get into the playoff race because of the loss to the Broncos, who will need to lose at least once and probably twice for the Tigers to have a shot. Memphis has a short week and is back in action on Oct. 16 (6:30 p.m. CT, ESPN), when the Tigers travel to

Bones trophy not significant to Huff and Memphis football
Memphis beat UAB in the Battle for the Bones on Saturday to reclaim the Bones trophy. The 94-pound rack of ribs, however, is not of any significance to Charles Huff. “I came here for one trophy,” Huff said. “Until I get it, I’m not touching another trophy.” That trophy is the American Conference Championship trophy. Huff made it clear the day he got to Memphis that his goal was to win a conference championship, something the Tigers have not done since 2019. “We are closing the gap,” Huff said. “It may take us 100 years to do it, but that’s got to be the focus.” Of course, Huff and Memphis care...

Memphis basketball sets up secret scrimmage with Jacksonville State, per sources
Memphis basketball has lined up a good, old-fashioned secret scrimmage ahead of its two open exhibition games. The Tigers will host Jacksonville State on Oct. 18 at FedExForum, multiple sources with direct knowledge told The Commercial Appeal. The Sources requested anonymity because no official announcement will be made. Schools across the country often pair up for secret scrimmages (which are closed to the public and off-limits to media, giving teams the freedom to customize the format and control scenario simulations) each year. Jacksonville State, which has featured the leading scorer in Conference USA each of the past three seasons, is coming off a 15-17 campaign. The Gamecocks welcomed a group of transfers this offseason that include Naas Cunningham (a former top-50 recruit whose collegiate career began at Alabama), Brandon Walker (a two-time All-Big Sky player at Montana State, who spent last season at Mississippi State), former Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Chris Lockett Jr., and former Memphis East standout Alijah Curry. The secret scrimmage will be the first opportunity for coach Penny Hardaway to see his retooled roster — led by guard Jayden Reid and forward Tylik Weeks — in a competitive setting against another team.
