TROY, N.Y. ( NEWS10 ) — Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello and Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin announced plans on Thursday to revitalize the Knickerbacker Ice Rink. The facility will be revamped with funding through the county’s $2 million American Rescue Plan Act contribution.

The arena was shut down in 2018 due to maintenance issues with ice making gear and piping. The city says the repair plan will be completed in multiple phases, and will involve renovating the rink, updating equipment and improving amenities at Knickerbacker Park.

“This project with the Knickerbacker Ice Rink is another key step in improving the quality of life for Troy and Rensselaer County residents. The revival of the Knick pool and now the rink will transform the Knickerbacker Park Complex, which will include more public skating,” Mayor Mantello said. “Thank you to the County Executive for his and the county’s partnership as we continue to revitalize Troy.”

County Executive Steve McLaughlin said “We are bringing back hockey and skating to the Knickerbacker ice rink, which makes this a great day in Rensselaer County and Troy. The Knick ice rink has been closed for too long and the county and city are coming together to reopen the rink.”

“This demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between the city and county. This is like a power-play for the residents who have been asking for years when the puck will drop next at the Knick.” Mayor Mantello added.
