Police renew calls for tips in search of Oakland County woman who vanished after leaving work nearly four decades ago

TROY (WWJ) — Nearly four decades after she was last seen, police are renewing calls for tips in the disappearance of an Oakland County mother.

Thursday, May 23 will mark 39 years since Cindy Louise Moore was last seen as she left her job at the U.S. Postal Service in Troy.

That night, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Moore was planning to drive to Warren, where her estranged husband William Moore lived. She was going to pick up their 2-year-old son and then go to Independence Township, where she was staying with her parents.

But something “appears to have gone terribly wrong,” according to the sheriff’s office. The 28-year-old Moore never picked up her son and she never went to her parents.

She was never seen again after leaving work on May 23, 1985. The last known sighting of her was by a coworker who saw her driving her silver 1984 Ford Tempo near the intersection of 14 Mile Road and Interstate 75 about 15 minutes after she left work that Thursday.

Moore’s car was found a week after she went missing, backed into a parking space in front of room number 153 at the Red Roof Inn at 14 Mile and John R in Madison Heights, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators determined the car had been parked there since the day after she was last seen.

The car was locked, the keys were missing, and there was no evidence of a struggle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials say Moore was living with her parents at the time of her disappearance and had made a down payment on a mobile home in Auburn Hills. She was planning to move there with her son. All her clothes were left behind, and her bank account hasn’t been touched since her disappearance.

Her husband was considered a suspect in her disappearance. The sheriff’s office says he “admitted assaulting her during an argument and once grabbed her by the throat, though was never arrested or charged.”

A pool at the family home in Warren was filled in shortly after she went missing. Police dug up the pool and searched the backyard, but no body was found.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard on Tuesday said he believes that someone, somewhere may know what happened to Moore.

“Sometimes, after years have passed, people that had information or knowledge are more willing to share and come forward,” Bouchard said, per a press release. “Oftentimes the guilt has been weighing on them or the fear has diminished. Please help us give this family some closure. Contact us If you have any information that would be helpful.”

The Cold Case Unit for the Sheriff’s Office has been working on the case in hopes that publicity surrounding her disappearance may generate information that can explain just what happened to Cindy Moore.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Oakland County Sheriff's Office at 248-858-4950.
