Drivers say Lyft’s record payout to end wage-theft case isn’t nearly enough
Alvaro Bolainez was one of 5,400 California ride-hail drivers who filed wage-theft claims in 2020 against Uber and Lyft. A Los Angeles resident, Bolainez had been driving for Lyft since it began offering service in the area in 2013 . Wage claims filed with the state Labor Commissioner’s Office only go back three years — but even so, looking back to just 2017, he calculated the company owed him $150,000 for unpaid wages and expenses. All told, the drivers who filed claims against the ride-hailing companies asserted the companies owed them $1.3 billion, including damages. Bolainez and the 1,933 other Lyft drivers in that group claimed the San Francisco company by itself owed them $434 million. “We knew that this company was violating labor rights,” he said. On Thursday, Lyft and a collection of state and city officials and private attorneys announced they had settled a wage-theft case sparked in part by those complaints. SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu – alongside California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the City Attorneys of San Diego and Los Angeles – announced a $272.5 million settlement with rideshare company Lyft, resolving allegations that between 2016 and 2020, Lyft committed wage theft by misclassifying drivers as independent contractors rather than employees.
