Feeding America plans distribution for Newberry and Gwinn Thursday
UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WLUC) - Feeding America West Michigan is working to ensure families have their shelves well stocked with food ahead of the Memorial Day holiday. The nonprofit organization has two food distribution events scheduled to take place throughout the day on Thursday. The first event is for residents in Newberry. It is located at the GCCP Dunlap Center at 6545 M-123. Distribution begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.
Scouting America recruiting new scouts ages 5 to 17
UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. (WLUC) - Upper Peninsula youth can experience the benefits of being a scout at an upcoming recruitment event. Scouting America’s Hiawathaland District of the Bay-Lakes Council serves the U.P. On Saturday, June 1, its ‘Spring into Scouting’ activity will be at the DNR Pocket Park at the State Fairgrounds in Escanaba.

Hiawatha Forest road closure starts next week
GLADSTONE, MI— A portion of road in the Hiawatha National Forest will be closed for bridge replacement this summer. FSR-3458—known as Burma North—will be temporarily closed from May 28th to August 20th. The Carp River Bridge, about 20 miles northwest of Saint Ignace, will be replaced, making the road impassable.
Trout Unlimited changes the way students learn about the environment
MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Upper Michigan Today joined a group of sixth graders and Trout Unlimited at the annual salmon release. Students from Gwinn Middle School released chinook salmon fry Friday into the Dead River near the County Road 550 bridge. They are part of the Salmon in the Classroom program sponsored by the Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited.
Billerud cancels plans for Escanaba Mill upgrade, UP leaders call it ‘disappointing’
WELLS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Billerud will not move forward with a $1 billion conversion at its Escanaba Mill, the company announced Tuesday morning. The disappointing news for Upper Michigan’s economy comes after the state approved funding of up to $200 million to support Billerud’s investment to convert the facility to cartonboard production. The company says the projected return on investment is not sufficiently attractive to proceed.
Polaris bringing network of electric ORV charging stations to Upper Peninsula
A network of electric charging stations for off-road vehicles is coming to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Polaris, an industry leader in powersports, previously announced that it is using a $700,000 grant through the Michigan Office of Future Mobility & Electrification to build an EV charging network for off-road vehicles within the U.P.’s public off-road trail system.

The Northland is under a Flood Watch from until 7am Wednesday morning. An additional 1-3” is likely all over with some areas seeing even more farther west toward Bemidji. This storm system will also bring strong and gusty northeast winds Tuesday night into Wednesday, gusts of 30 to 40 mph are possible. Winds then turn to the WSW Wednesday, and continue to be gusty. Winds will likely be in the 15-25 mph sustained winds early Wednesday morning.
Marquette Youth Volume nurtures young talent with Suzuki method, improv, and guest artists
An upcoming Spring Recital will put musical talent on display with youth performers from the Marquette area. Marquette Youth Volume will host the recital at Still Point North in Harvey on Saturday, June 8th, 2024, led by director Clara Hardie. Young violinists and cellists, ages 4-15, will perform, followed by a joint, improvisational portion with guest artist C.J. Redfearn. This producer, beatmaker, and DJ (originally from Gwinn) will collaborate with the students to make a unique sound of pre-produced beats and string soundscapes.
