Tayquan Alston, Rocky Mount: A streak of his own

Rocky Mount senior Tayquan Alston took first place in the Big East 5A/6A Conference meet Oct. 21 at Red Oak Middle School. He also qualified for the state meet after a 13th-place showing in this past weekend’s Class 5A East Regionals. Q: Was (winning the conference) a goal for you at the beginning of the season? A: This was a goal as soon as I hit the summer. The conference championship was on the line. I wanted to finally break the (Northern Nash) streak. Q: What didn’t you like about your conference championship finish last year that fueled you this year? A: Last year, I got a bad spot. I lost to (runners) I hadn’t lost to before, and it got to me. So I put my mind to training the whole summer. Q: Tell me about those summer workouts that got you ready for the season. A: I did a lot of easy long runs with some tempo throughout. Q: You’ve run this course at Red Oak Middle School several times. What are the challenging parts, and what are the best things? A: The challenging part is the whole course. You can’t afford to slow down at all because

AGHS effort featured at state conference

An exceptional school-based enterprise at Ayden-Grifton High School was showcased at a state conference this week. The Charger Brews was selected for the 75th annual Conference on Exceptional Children, which the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Office of Exceptional Children hosted through Friday in Greensboro. The AGHS effort was highlighted as part of a School-Based Enterprise Bazaar showcasing products created and marketed by students with disabilities. The Pitt County Board of Education on Monday honored AGHS special education teacher Meredith Setser for the program’s inclusion in the conference. “This recognition really highlights their creativity, their entrepreneurship and the way that they are extending their learning beyond the classroom,” PCS Exceptional Children’s Director Dawn Hester said. The Charger Brews is a coffee and snacks enterprise staffed by students in the exceptional children’s program at AGHS. High school football: All eight area teams set to kick off state playoffs

Every public school in the county, plus Greene Central and John Paul II, advanced to the upcoming NCHSAA football playoffs scheduled to get under way on Friday — but only one earned a bye. J.H. Rose’s first undefeated regular season in 20 years earned the Rampants the No. 1 seed in the East 6A bracket. Therefore, Rose (10-0), the Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference champion, has a bye through this week’s first round and will await the winner of No. 16 South Johnston and No. 17 Felton Grove (a new high school in Apex which opened its doors in 2025) on Nov. 13 at Percy Daniels Fields at the Farley-Minges Complex. The Rampants’ defense recorded four shutouts and yielded an average of 12.6 points per game, while the offense scored at least 20 points per outing and averaged 41.1 per game. A primary point of emphasis, though, could be cutting down on penalties. J.H. Rose committed 16 infractions, six of those personal fouls, in a 53-0 victory over D.H. Conley. “We have to do some extracurricular activities on those [practice] days,” Rampants coach Will Bland said, referring to extra sprints and running in practice. “We’ve got to clear up some penalties
