TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Dreary weather has delayed the annual tree planting event for Arbor Day at the Kansas Statehouse.

On Friday, Governor Laura Kelly was in attendance for the City of Topeka’s Forestry Division Arbor Day event. While at the event, Kelly signed a proclamation declaring Friday, April 26 as Kansas Arbor Day, according to an announcement made by the city on Facebook.

The city didn’t say when the tree planting would be rescheduled. A 5th-grade Arbor Day Poster Contest winner from Osage City was also in attendance.

This marks the 38th year the City of Topeka has been a member of Tree City USA.

“The membership demonstrates the city’s commitment to urban forestry, and recognizing the important role trees play in our community,” the City of To p eka said on Facebook.
