Scott Cepicky, R-Culleoka, leveled sharp criticism at Battle in a conservative talk radio interview last month, saying MNPS and Memphis-Shelby County Schools were negatively affecting the state's overall academic achievement. He also said he asked House Speaker Cameron Sexton for a state audit of MNPS. A spokesperson for Sexton told The Tennessean "all possible options" are being explored and that "nothing is off the table" when it comes to a state audit of the district, which is the second-largest in Tennessee. After delivering a keynote address during a November Rotary Club of Nashville meeting, Battle told reporters she was "not familiar" with Cepicky's comments. She said MNPS frequently engages in monitoring and audits and referred to a recently launched audit of the district's performance and operations, commissioned by the Metro Nashville Council.
