County’s plan to buy apartments fails

A proposal for Shawano County to purchase a small apartment complex for a potential library construction project fell short of the required two-thirds support needed. Supervisors voted 15-10 (with one abstention and one member absent) on Sept. 23 to purchase the two-building, 12-unit complex at 205 E. Division St. However, County Clerk Raymond Rigsby later informed the board that because the purchase was unbudgeted, a two-thirds vote of the entire board (18 of 27 members) was required.

State, local intervention could jumpstart condo development, report says

Condominium development in Wisconsin's largest cities remains low, and it will likely take local and state intervention to change that, according to a new study. An average of just eight condo units were added in Milwaukee annually between 2021 and 2025, according to a report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum released Sept. 17. That's down from an average of 309 units per year from 2004 to 2008, when state condo production peaked. Madison saw a drop from 507 annual units in the mid-2000s to 16 between 2021 and 2025, the report found. "In Wisconsin, the perception of a dramatic slowdown in condo production is rooted in reality," the report said. This comes despite some demographic trends that suggest Wisconsin's condo market has room to grow. Condo owners typically live in a smaller household than single-family homeowners, and the state has a higher percentage of one- or two-person households than the nation as a whole. A few developers recently announced plans for condo projects that, if constructed, could start to address the shortage.
