Marathon County’s proposed 2027 budget trims the tax rate by a penny, yet the average homeowner will pay $52.58 more, largely because of a new highway shop. County Administrator Lance Leonhard presented the $238.6 million spending plan to the Human Resources, Finance and Property Committee on Sept. 29. The document runs 204 pages, and the two headline numbers pull in opposite directions: a tax rate of $3.48 per $1,000 of equalized value, down from $3.49, alongside a property tax levy of $66.25 million, up $5.02 million, or 8.2 percent, from this year. You can say the budget cuts taxes or raises them, Leonhard writes. “Both are true.”
