Epworth United Methodist Church, the largest United Methodist congregation in the Toledo area, will celebrate its 130th anniversary on May 19.

Following the 11 a.m. modern worship service, there will be a celebration with music, prayer, and food beginning at 12:30 p.m.

RSVPs are requested by Sunday by contacting James@epworth.com or 419-531-4236. Epworth UMC is located at 4855 W. Central Ave., Toledo.

The congregation was established as Epworth Methodist Episcopal Church on May 24, 1894, by 163 charter members in what is now Toledo’s Old West End, according to Epworth’s website.

Its first building was dedicated that December on Scottwood Avenue before a larger church at Parkwood and Delaware avenues was constructed in 1908. That church was damaged in a 1958 fire, and the current church building in Ottawa Hills was dedicated in 1961.

The congregation underwent two name changes in 1939 and 1968 as the denomination changed its name over time.
