78-Year-Old Daly City Killer Known as 'Mayor of San Quentin' Granted Parole

Michael Connolly, 78, has been granted parole for a Daly City killing—but the decision does not mean he will be released immediately. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office opposed his release at a hearing at Folsom State Prison, according to KRON4. Gunfire strikes Berkeley corner store early Saturday morning

A man shot at a central Berkeley convenience store early Saturday morning, striking the building, according to preliminary reports. The shooting happened at about 4:20 a.m. at Popeye's Tobacco & Grocery, at 1597 University Ave., Berkeley police said. Multiple people called 911 to report five to 10 gunshots in the area. Police said three employees were inside the store, which is listed as open 24 hours. The shooter was described as a man wearing a black ski mask and dark clothing. He reportedly walked away from the scene and may have gotten into a vehicle, police said. No injuries were reported. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Prior to Saturday, Berkeley and UC Berkeley police had investigated three injury shootings and seven non-injury shootings this year. Berkeley had not had a shooting since August, when UC Berkeley's ShotSpotter system detected gunfire in the 1100 block of Eighth Street.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) has been destroying trees in the areas it controls, to the dismay of tree-lovers and neighbors. We’ve noted earlier that SFPUC is using the same playbook as the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department’s “Native Resources Department” (NRD- the former Native Area Program). It’s against trees, particularly eucalyptus – San Francisco’s most numerous and ecologically important tree-species – and pro-pesticide. (See our analysis for last year, San Francisco Pesticides 2025: NRD Usage up 60%). NRD is responsible for much of San Francisco’s tree losses across the city. SF PUC, which had implemented the pesticide policy, is also cutting down trees.

San Francisco police executed a search warrant Friday morning at the now notorious Sea Cliff manse that has served as a cushy squatters' haven for at least the past year. The home at 250 32nd Avenue in SF's tony Sea Cliff neighborhood, which was abandoned by its owners in recent years and is now in the hands of the city, was emptied of its remaining occupants Friday morning. As the Chronicle reports, SFPD officers executed a search warrant at the property around 7:30 am Friday, breaking down the front door and removing evidence, in addition to removing a group of people who were staying there.
