Cooking fire displaces city resident
Grease burning in an oven caused a fire that heavily damaged a house in Mount Airy and displaced a man living there, according to officials. The incident was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, involving a one-story structure at 210 Mountain View Road located just off U.S. 601 near Mountain View Road’s intersection with Main Drive.

Two months later, no closure for homicide victim's family
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — The brother of a homicide victim in North Wilkesboro is asking for justice. North Wilkesboro Police tells WXII that on Sept. 29, 2023, they and Wilkes County EMS found a shooting victim on L Street in North Wilkesboro. The victim, Levern Johnson, 32, later died of that wound on Oct. 10.

WILKESBORO — Wilkes Community College (WCC) has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (CAE-CD) by the National Security Agency (NSA). The designation is in effect through the 2028 academic year. Family seeks answers in death of 14-year old son
BOONVILLE — On Sept. 26 Kacie Gillespie got the phone call of nightmares — a video call no less — of her son lying on the floor bleeding. Channing O'Neal, age 14, sustained a gunshot wound to the head while at a friend's house just a few miles from his own home in Boonville. He passed away from the injury on Sept. 28 at Brenner Children's Hospital. The official cause of death on Channing's death certificate is listed as suicide, but his mom Kacie and stepdad John Gillespie don't think that's what happened. Most of all, the family has concerns that their son's death was not properly investigated.
