Local residents and area leaders, including law enforcement, educators, local governmental leaders, media and ministers gathered at the Free Church in Thief River Falls for the National Day of Prayer. On the National Day of Prayer, the nation recognizes the power of prayer to strengthen spirits, draw people together and create hope for a better tomorrow. By law, the President is called upon to issue a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer. by Rev. Dr. Betty Johnson Thief River Falls United Methodist Church The rain changed the venue for the National Day of Prayer on Friday in Thief River Falls, but it didn’t change the spirit of the half hour of dedicated prayers for our nation and community. Despite the rain, nearly 100 people gathered for prayer, including clergy, law enforcement, health care personnel, educators, families, government officials, military and media. A spirit of unity, respect, appreciation, and encouragement prevailed. Representatives from eight local churches offered prayers for each of the people groups acknowledged during the prayer time, which started at noon. A delicious light meal was provided by the Thief River Falls Ministerial Association, which hosted the event. The Ministerial Association hopes that the gathering on Thursday will be much more than just a one-day event. All those in attendance were encouraged to continue to pray throughout the coming year for the people-groups recognized for their service, our fabulous community of Thief River Falls and surrounding area, and our nation. The National Day of Prayer, held annually on the first Thursday of May, was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress inviting people "to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Originally signed by President Harry S. Truman, each president is required by law to sign a proclamation encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.
