Freshman Phenom Takes On New Heights
On Monday, Pole Vaulter Ben Haywood competed in the Region 2 track and field Championships. Despite being a freshman, a fact he’s aware of at every meet, Ben didn’t let it deter him at this event either. The age difference with his competitors, who are mostly older, could be seen as a disadvantage, but Ben didn’t let it affect his performance. He put in his best effort and secured the second position, which led to his advancement to the UIL 6A State Meet. Even though it wasn’t his best performance, he managed to outperform his rivals and progress further in the season by clearing a height of 15 feet and 3 inches. The fact that many of his competitors are older and have committed to DI Universities added another layer of challenge for Ben, but he overcame it to concentrate on his jumps.
