Malden Declaration Day – Special Tribute to Black Revolutionary War Veterans
Mayor Gary Christenson, Library Director Dora St. Martin, and members of the Historical Society welcomed residents on June 28th at Bell Rock Historic Cemetery to kick-off Independence Day celebrations. Ward 1 Councillor Peg Crowe, Ward 4 Councillor Ryan O’Malley, Ward 5 Councillor Ari Taylor, Ward 6 Councillor Steve Winslow, and Ward 7 School Committee Member Keith Bernard all attended the ceremony.
Grand Opening of Junior Auto Body
Mayor Gary Christenson recently participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony of Junior Auto Body, located at 9 Whitman Street. Business Owner Gilberto Tercetti, known as Junior, recently joined the Malden Chamber of Commerce. Born in Italy and raised in Brazil, Junior served for a year and a half in the Brazilian Army before transferring to the Military Police, where he served for an additional two and a half years. He later worked as a Police Detective.
2024 Juneteenth Freedom Celebration
The City of Malden hosted its 7th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration at the Ferryway School with over 400 community members and guests in attendance. Following a moving rendition of the "Lift Every Voice and Sing," the Black National Anthem by singer/songwriter Lydia Harrell, Mayor Christenson issued a proclamation in honor of the Day. Community members gathered to enjoy the entertaining and inspiring program which included speakers, poets, singers, and dancers.
Mayor Christenson Seeks Members to Human Rights & Fair Housing Commission
Mayor Gary Christenson is reaching out to Malden residents to fill two “resident” member openings on the Human Rights and Fair Housing Commission (“Commission”). Members of the Commission work to ensure that all residents, regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, sexual identity, age, ancestry, sexual orientation, familial status, marital status, veteran status, or physical, mental or emotional capacity or disability, are afforded equal opportunity in or access to credit eligibility, employment, housing, education, recreation, public accommodations, public services and licensing, and shall minimize unlawful discrimination by encouraging mutual understanding among all residents.
Frank R. Cina, Jr. Memorial
Last weekend, the City of Malden Disability Commission was pleased to join Mayor Gary Christenson and the family of Frank R. Cina, Jr., to dedicate a rest area in front of the Senior/Teen Center in Frank’s memory. Frank passed away in 2022 and was an active member of the Disability Commission since its inception in 2018 and a strong advocate for making Malden accessible for all.

Business Owner Darcy Overberg is well known for how much fun her students have while taking her classes. Eagle Scout Madison Santos
Mayor Gary Christenson congratulated Boy Scout Troop 603’s Eagle Scout Madison Santos in a recent ceremony in City Council Chambers. Over the course of his scouting career, which began as a Cub Scout in Houston, Texas, Madison earned many merit badges as he worked towards the highest attainable rank in scouting of Eagle Scout. Mayor Christenson presented Madison a citation on behalf of the City and congratulated him on a job well done!
Eritrean Independence Day Celebrated in Malden
Mayor Gary Christenson joined the Malden Eritrean Community on May 24th on City Hall Plaza to celebrate of one of the most important Eritrean holidays. This year marks 33 years of independence and the day serves to honor the heroic struggle and ultimate sacrifices of those involved in the war for independence against Ethiopia. The Eritrean Flag, a symbol of Eritrea’s protracted struggle, was raised on City Hall Plaza. At an evening event, Mayor Christenson presented proclamations from the City and on behalf of Governor Maura Healey’s office in honor of the contributions that the Eritrean Community have contributed to the rich history, culture and diversity of the City of Malden.
Celebrating May as Mental Health Awareness Month
On May 20th, the Malden Disability Commission, led by Chair Marilyn Andrews, hosted an event in the Council Chamber in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. The event featured Lynda Cutrell, a mental health advocate focused on building public awareness about mental health, outreach, education, and advocacy. Lynda created the “99 Faces Project” which was exhibited at the Boston Museum of Science and addresses the science of our mental health while promoting the narrative of actual recoveries.
Dr. Timothy Sippel Named Next Superintendent of Malden Public Schools
The Malden School Committee is pleased to announce Dr. Timothy Sippel as the next Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2024, pending contract negotiations. The announcement comes after a vote of the School Committee last Thursday evening following the recommendations put forth by a Search Committee led by School Committee members Sharyn Rose-Zeiberg and Jennifer Spadafora. The Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) assisted with the selection process which was a collaborative effort involving feedback from the community and a panel made up of school principals, educators, directors, support staff, caregivers, and the City’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer.
