Panama City marine rescuers break ground on long-awaited facility

PANAMA CITY — The Florida Panhandle Marine Institute (FPMI) broke ground on its new animal rehab facilities in downtown Panama City on Oct. 17. FPMI specializes in the rescue and rehabilitation of marine life, such as dolphins and sea turtles, across the region. FPMI's stranding coordinator, Lauren Albrittain, spoke to the News Herald in September. The mission Albrittain said the mission is threefold, with the most obvious part being rescue and rehabilitation. They respond to "strandings," which is when an injured, sick or dead marine animal washes up on the beach. "Second, we want to educate. We want to both educate the general public as well as our conservation partners," said Albrittain. "Anything we learn from every single case can be contributed to the knowledge base for those animals." "The third part of our mission is to conduct as much and contribute as much conservation research as possible," said Albrittain. "So basically, anytime we're learning about these cases, we are not only gathering medical information if they're live cases, but we're also gathering information that can be put toward better understanding of the (animals.)"
