Groesbeck golfer Johnny Howard qualified for his third Region III 3A golf tournament with a runner-up finish at the District 20-3A tourney at Tri-County Golf Club at the Vineyards in Teague on Monday, April 1.
Howard will head to the regional as one of two individual medalists from the district. The top two teams and top two individuals not on those teams qualify for regional play. The Goats finished fourth in the team standings.
Howard, the defending district champion, was tied for the lead with a 2-over par 74 after the first round Monday, March 26. He and Grayson Dancer were atop the leaderboard. Franklin's Ryan Tucker was on stroke behind with a 75.
Tucker carded a 74 in the second round and won the tourney with a 149. Howard shot a 76 in the second round and finished with a 150. Howard's total was six strokes better than last year, when he won the tournament. Dancer finished third with a 157 and also qualified for the regional as an individual.
Howard will be trying to qualify for his first state tournament. He has previously signed to play college golf at Seminole State in Oklahoma.
The Region III-3A Tournament will take place in Brenham with the boys tournament April 15-16 and the girls April 17-18.
In addition to Howard, Cade Carroll, Jack Carroll, Cade Duncan and Ethan Walker also competed for fourth-place Groesbeck (362-372=734).
Groesbeck's girls team was fifth (510-510=1,020). The Lady Goats were represented by Charley Agnew, Emily Hatcher, Caroline Mathis, Rainy Samuels and Kaleigh Wolf.
Franklin won the boys and girls team titles in district to qualify for the regional. The Fairfield I boys and Fairfield girls teams were runners-up and will head to the regional.
The district tournament was a two-day event which started on March 26.
After the opening round on the boys side, Franklin led with a score of 341, while Fairfield I, Groesbeck and Teague had scores of 357, 362 and 369, respectively.
On the girls side, Franklin led after the opening day with a score of 425, while Fairfield and Buffalo I had scores of 445 and 461, respectively.
Allie Hughes of Fairfield shot an 83 to take the lead -- 10 strokes ahead of second-place Railyn Youree of Franklin (93).
In the final round on Monday, it was much of the same for the team standings. Franklin (425-432=857), Fairfield (445-428=873) and Buffalo I (461-435=896) stayed 1-2-3 in the girls standings, while Franklin (341-349=690) and Fairfield I (357-353=710) stayed 1-2 in the boys standings.
The individual leaderboard on the girls side remained the same. Hughes (83-88=171), Youree (93-95=188) and Elkhart's Cyndi Boyd (100-98=198) finished both rounds 1-2-3, while Lilly Reinhardt of Franklin (101-105=206) and Emilee Bowdoin of Buffalo I (111-98=209) finished 4-5.
Because Hughes, Youree and Reinhardt were on qualifying teams, Boyd and Bowdoin qualified as individual medalists. In addition to Hughes, Zada Pjetrovic, Addison Shipley, Hadassah Owen and Cariss Capps will represent the Lady Eagles in Brenham in two weeks.
Representing Fairfield on the boys side will be Cade Nelson, Brayden Thornburg, Dio Azuara, Jake White and Chandler Phillips.
