H&H Concrete wins bidding war for River Road property
H and H Concrete will soon be the new owners of the longtime vacant property at 1014 River Road in Williamston. The Williamston Board of Commissioners approved a motion to award the property to the company in a split 3-2 board decision, with Commissioners David Richmond and Anthony Gianpoalo voting against the motion. Ed Holliday, owner of H and H Concrete was excited when he heard the news. However, the action was not without question by the original bidder on the property, Jeremy Maxik. Once ignored by most residents and Williamston town officials, the property at 1014 River Road came into focus when Maxik, owner of Hook Hand Brewery and President of Blackwater Cider, along with numerous other Williamston buildings, placed a bid for the vacant former service station. Maxik submitted extensive plans outlining the remodel and development of a Kayak rental activity center with possible kitchen facilities to address food truck needs. Maxik’s proposal offered an indepth overview of what the property could become, with a financial outline and projected timeline for completion of the project. The proposal stirred community interest and soon other bidders stepped up creating an upset bid — bidding war. By the time the bidding

New Bern mid-year housing market review
Seven months into 2026, the housing market is showing signs of unwinding from the pandemic-era frenzy that drained supply, pushed prices to record highs, and brought activity to a standstill. Buyers have more homes to choose from than they did at the start of the year, competition has balanced in a few slower markets, and price growth has remained relatively modest. Affordability is still a key issue and is limiting activity, though.

First building up at Rocky Mount Industrial Village
Motorists driving on Thomas A. Betts Parkway northwest of Rocky Mount have been seeing a commercial development in the early stages taking shape. That includes a brand new 45,000-square-foot building in place and visible to motorists turning off the parkway onto Peele Road. The structure is part of the Rocky Mount Industrial Village, which the Birmingham, Ala., based Ruddell Group is overseeing. Dean Taitz, an industrial real estate developer and the founder of the Ruddell Group, and Nicolle Brengman, the group’s operations manager, fielded questions in a recent teleconference call about the new building, which is designed to attract a light industrial prospect. The purpose of the Rocky Mount Industrial Village, which is a total of 55 acres in size, is to have a set of first-class buildings for current and new businesses and industries on both the southwest side of the intersection of Betts and Peele and on the northwest side of the intersection of Betts and Peele. Taitz also spoke about him and Brengman showing people the strong workforce available in Rocky Mount, and of the city being a great place to live and work, having ready access to Interstate 95 and having commercial rental rates less than
