Workweek: Greenville truck driver recognized by Cargo Transporters
Cargo Transporters has recognized Greenville resident and military veteran Larry Rhodes as its Driver of the Month for October 2026. Rhodes was selected for his dependability, professionalism and willingness to handle every assignment given to him, according to Cargo. Rhodes joined Cargo Transporters in December 2018 and operates out of the company’s Rocky Mount terminal. During his career with Cargo, he has accumulated more than 900,000 miles and earned the trust of his Fleet Leader, Sherri Strahan. “He is always on time,” Strahan said. “He does whatever is given to him, no matter what. He is very professional and represents Cargo well on the road.” Rhodes enjoys the variety that comes with a career behind the wheel. “You never know what you’re going to see one day to the next,” Rhodes said. “Seeing new things is probably my favorite part.” When asked about his view on safety, Rhodes described it as his “priority number one.” His advice to drivers entering the industry is equally direct: “Just be patient.” Rhodes also values the personal opportunities his career with Cargo provides. He said the company allows him to remain close to his daughter while she attends college. Headquartered in Claremont, Cargo Transporters

Popular lobster pop food truck won't return to NC State Fair over new vendor fees
They’ve had lobster lollipops, giant shrimp, king crab legs and swordfish bites on a stick, all coated with bright lemon pepper and glistening butter. But not this year. Oak City Fish & Chips won’t be pushing its seafood skewers at the 2026 North Carolina State Fair, sitting out for the first time in six years. Oak City developed a reputation as one of the most decadent fair food vendors , serving luxury seafood on a stick. One year, its crab leg skewer cost as much as $76 and sales could total more than $200,000 over 10 days. But Oak City is skipping the 2026 NC State Fair in response to vendor changes that could see them paying tens of thousands of dollars more in fees. Oak City co-owner Isaac Horton said the vendor changes coupled with a rising economy could dampen sales at this year’s fair as customers face higher prices.

Edenton celebrates Public Power Month
Edenton marked Public Power week, celebrating both its relationship with ElectriCities for its wholesale power and the town’s decision to run its own town power company for the benefit of its residents, on Oct. 9. The celebration was part of a week-long regional event, Public Power Week, but Edenton went a step farther, providing free hotdogs and hamburgers for residents as a show of thanks, taking the opportunity to hand out customer satisfaction surveys as well. Edenton operates its own power company, providing power to residents it purchases from ElectriCities and operating its own electric department and transmission lines. That makes electric power a municipal service, placing decisions about the local utility in the hands of residents and providing customer feedback to town employees and elected officials. Offering electricity to residents involves more than buying electricity wholesale and passing it on retail. Edenton’s electric department employs its own linemen and billing department. The town said that arrangement makes electric distribution more service oriented because the town answers to its residents rather than a board of directors and a profit motive. ElectriCities serves more than 90 community-owned electric companies in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. It provides training, communications, economic
