Students discovered what turned out to be a dead baby in a garbage bin on Sunday near a University of Tampa residence hall, one day after residents reported hearing a crying baby in a first floor dorm room. On Saturday, paramedics visited McKay Hall to follow up on a report that someone had a miscarriage, and searched the room of a 19-year-old girl, who told them the blood in her bathroom was just from normal menstruation. Students later discovered a suspicious item in a trash bag, which Tampa police determined to be a baby which was “deceased and beyond help.” In an interview with police, the young woman said that she’d had no idea she was pregnant before she gave birth on Saturday morning, although she later stated she may have been in denial about the pregnancy. The baby had cried for only a few seconds before falling silent, after which, the mother said she could not identify a heartbeat, and she wrapped the child’s body in a towel, and left it in a trash can. According to the affidavit several residents saw her roommate holding something wrapped in a towel. Thus far, no charges have been filed, according to Fox 13 .
