Runaway Said Raped; Two Charged
Two men from the Chadbourn area are being held under no bond after allegedly helping a teenaged girl run away from home. She was later allegedly raped by one of the men. Aldo Ismael Esparza, 20, and Gabriel Venegas Zuniga, 28, both of 49 Birchwood Trail, were arrested May 14 by the sheriff’s office. Esparza is charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and second degree kidnapping. Zuniga was held for statutory rape of a child and second degree kidnapping.

Whiteville radio station rebuilds after fire destroys transmitter, takes it off the air
WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) - Radio silence has been the reality for one station for the past two months after a fire in Whiteville. The fire burned up the FM transmitter for KOOL 103.9 back in March. Now the station is trying to rebuild. Glasgow Hicks, known to his listeners as ‘the Glassman’, has run the station out of Whiteville since 2019.
Vereen Pleads in 2019 Carnivore Case
One of the suspects arrested in a 2019 felony sweep in Columbus County pleaded guilty Friday in Superior Court. Joshua Vereen entered a plea of guilty to charges of being a habitual felon and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to 117 to 153 months in prison, or nine to twelve years behind bars. Judge Tiffany Powers handed down the sentence.
