In a tightly-contested ballgame at Frank DeFelice Diamond in Swampscott, the Big Blue baseball team (6-4) got the better of Beverly in a 5-4 final.

Swampscott’s Nick Berube hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to tie the game (2-2). Zach Alex pitched four strong innings, while Quinn Fitzpatrick picked up the eight-out save in relief, retiring all eight batters he faced.

Coach Joe Caponigro and the rest of his Big Blue upped their record to 5-3 in the Northeastern Conference ahead of Friday’s 4 p.m. date with Peabody.

    BASEBALL

    St. Mary’s 2

    Arlington Catholic 0

St. Mary’s has faced 10 teams this season. Spoiler alert: none have been able to knock off the Spartans (10-0).

They took care of business at Fraser Field behind a complete-game, two-hit shutout from pitcher Josh Doney (9 K). It was Jared Paone’s two-RBI double that brought St. Mary’s runs home.

    Lynn Classical 15

    Everett 1

Beneath the 7 p.m. lights at Fraser Field, Lynn Classical (6-4) handled Everett with ease, 15-1. Breaden Ohannefian (2 RBI) registered his first varsity hit, while Almani Gerado (4 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) connected on two hits and an RBI alongside three runs scored.

    Bishop Fenwick 5

    Archbishop Williams 1

Timmy Ronningen (3 K, 3 BB) gave up just five hits across 6 2/3 innings with one earned run to get the victory for the Crusaders. Chris D’Angelo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored to help Fenwick prevail over Williams.

    Marblehead 7

    Saugus 4

Although the home team, due to poor field conditions, Saugus had to go to Seaside Park to “host” Marblehead in a Northeastern Conference rival game.

Marblehead’s (6-4) Matt Mahan went 3 2/3 innings, striking out four Sachems, but it was junior Carter Sahagian who earned the win on the mound. On offense, Bodie Bartram went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

    SOFTBALL

    Peabody 6

    Marblehead 0

    It wasn’t just a no-hitter.

Peabody’s Abby Bettencourt made history Wednesday afternoon, breaking Tiana Dawe’s school record for the most career strikeouts. Bettencourt – who entered the game tied with Dawe (612) – struck out 11 Magicians to increase her total to 623.

    Lynnfield 15

    Ipswich 3

Lynnfield sophomore Gia Gagnon (5 K) earned her first career varsity win. She went the full five innings in this one, allowing one earned run on six hits and a walk.

At the plate, Julia Corrente tripled twice, while Kaila George and Morgan Hubbard had three hits apiece. Lynnfield sits at 4-6 and 2-5 in the Cape Ann League.

    Everett 16

    Lynn Classical 4

Despite a two-run homer from senior captain Lauren Wilson and a solo shot from junior captain Nevaeh Eth, the Rams fell short in enemy territory. Emma Chevalier registered an RBI double for Classical (4-5).

    Danvers 16

    Swampscott 8

The Big Blue offense was powered by Lauryn Fahey who went 4-for-4, while Hayden Haskell  and Maddie Lilley also had multi-hit games. Cece O’Connor, Olivia Barletta, and Mel Blood registered RBI, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Falcons.

    Beverly 8

    Saugus 2

Saugus fell to 4-6 on the season with a loss to the Panthers. Untimely defensive errors cost Saugus as Beverly scored four unearned runs.

“We just can’t seem to put it all together yet,” said Saugus coach Steve Almquist.

Ava Rogers went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sabrina Tamborello went 1-for-2 with a single and an RBI.

Late in the fourth quarter, James Achterhof scooped up a groundball in the Magicians’ third, ran past four defenders, then fired a shot past the Falcons’ goalie for Marblehead’s 16th goal.

Brady Tersolo scored a goal and provided an assist for Danvers.

“It has been a great week winning three in a row, and I have been able to get the whole roster in for varsity match experience,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “We have some upcoming tough opponents in Beverly, Danvers, and Newburyport, so I’ll be calling on my starters to win some key victories.”
