Best of Bigfork: Bigfork Anglers a fly-fishing sanctuary
In a small, repurposed house on Bridge Street, a stone's throw from where the Swan River bleeds into Bigfork Bay, and where pine needles accumulate on the eaves in the fall, is Bigfork's fly-fishing sanctuary. In the center of the Bigfork Anglers Fly Shop are hundreds of flies: dainty dry flies made from muskrat and elk and calf hair, silicone legs, nymphs and droppers and neon bobbers. On the periphery are the quirky additions that tourists looking for a pair of sunglasses or maps miss. There's the drum set tucked away in the back corner where fishing guides are known to riff in the dead of winter when the fishing is slow. Or there's the high-top table where old timers tie flies and swap stories from the river, and guides kick back after a long day with clients. Fly fishers approach their sport with a passion that often borders on obsession. Life consists of the mesmerizing flow of the trout stream and the meditative cast of the fly rod in the early morning and late evening when the light is soft and the fish are biting. But away from the river, and the solitude it promises, these anglers need a

Bluegrass bands to play in Whitefish this weekend
North Fork Crossing and Silas Herman & The Tone Unit are coming together for a two-night engagement Oct. 23 and 24 at The Second Story in downtown Whitefish. They’ll bring an evening of bluegrass, jamgrass, Americana, psychedelic folk, and old-time string music to an intimate indoor room. North Fork Crossing is a new-age bluegrass band living somewhere between the traditional world of timeless fiddle tunes and ballads and the wide-open possibilities of the jamgrass community. Based in Montana's Gallatin Valley, the quintet of Cade Slayden, Ryan Kelly, Rabi Phelan, Silas Rea and Matt Hickey, is part of a new generation pushing string band music forward without losing sight of its roots. Their recently released sophomore album, "Portland Rose," showcases that evolution with 12 new studio tracks blending traditional bluegrass, old-time music, jamgrass, heartfelt ballads and hard-driving banjo. Joining them is Silas Herman & The Tone Unit, led by the Colorado-born multi-instrumentalist whose music draws from new acoustic, folk, bluegrass, psychedelic and Americana traditions. From intimate acoustic performances to high-energy improvisational sets, Herman has built a reputation for virtuosic playing and deeply soulful performances. Tickets are $35 and are available at buzzhive.info/e/north-fork-crossing-silas-herman-the-tone-unit-2026-10-23.
