El Niño pushes tides higher, causes flooding near local harbor
The Channel Islands Harbor reached what could be a record high tide this week, as a strengthening El Niño boosts sea levels along the Southern California coast. Ocean water crested a rock wall at the Oxnard-area harbor and washed over a stretch of Victoria Avenue. At its peak, the tide reached residential driveways across the road. The vast majority of the flooding came from seawater flowing backwards through the storm drain, officials said. While the water receded quickly, this week’s record-breaking tides throughout the region happened without any storm surge, big waves or King Tides. "If there was a storm right now, this would be much worse," said Michael Tripp, Ventura County's harbor director, standing near the water's edge on Oct. 27. The latest outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called a strong to very strong El Niño likely. The warmer waters near the equator tilt the odds for a wet winter in Southern California. That could mean not only above-normal rainfall but also high ocean waves and tides that can cause damage along the coast. El Niño conditions have pushed sea levels higher, on top of a marine heat wave that already gave them a boost. By
