Heat peaks today with strong storms possible this afternoon and evening

A few passing showers will move across portions of Southeast Michigan early this morning, but the bigger weather story unfolds later today as heat and humidity peak. The most favorable timing for strong to severe thunderstorms will be this afternoon and evening, roughly from 2 PM to midnight. Temperatures will soar into the low 90s, with heat indices exceeding 100 degrees in many locations. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon today through 8 PM for Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. The combination of extreme heat and humidity will make it feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature, so take precautions if spending time outdoors.

Overnight Storm Cluster Could Bring Gusty Winds Up To 60 MPH And Large Hail Along I 96 Corridor Toward Detroit After Midnight

MICHIGAN — Model guidance is showing consistency in a cluster of thunderstorms developing after midnight in west Michigan, with the activity expected to track southeast along the Interstate 96 corridor toward Detroit through the overnight hours. Gusty winds up to 60 mph and large hail would be the main threats if this cluster materializes as forecast. Communities including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor, and Detroit could see impacts between roughly 12 a.m. and 5 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, prompting forecasters to urge residents to activate NOAA Weather Radios overnight.

Severe storms leave almost 280,000 without power Thursday night

Severe weather struck southeast Michigan again on Thursday, spurring tornado warnings and leaving the region initially with more than 350,000 people without power at the onset of the storms. Collectively, 3.24 million people were under threat of tornadoes in Wayne, Macomb, Oakland, Livingston and Washtenaw counties, according to warnings from the National Weather Service. The warnings began after 3 p.m. and lasted until nearly 5 p.m. There were many reports of high wind damage, trees down and hail in Metro Detroit, according to the weather service. Among communties reporting storm damage: Haslett had more than 100 downed trees; Edgemont Park and Brighton saw 60 mph winds; and Hudson Mills had trees and power lines down. Trees also were reported down near Ann Arbor at Jackson and Zeeb roads. The storm-chasing group Tornado Tacklers reported a likely tornado in or around Williamston, located just east of Lansing off Interstate 96. The group reported hundreds of trees down between Lansing and Detroit. National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Tilley said when the service receives a tornado report, they ask about the character and severity of the damage, and match it up with radar "signatures."
