School district hosting surplus sale
LA GRANDE — The La Grande School District will conduct a surplus sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 26. The sale will be at 902 M Ave., the site of the Annex Building. Miscellaneous inventory, including chairs, desks, cabinets, tools, hardware and pianos, will be available to the public for purchase.
New winery taking shape in downtown La Grande

LGFD Reminds residents to follow yard debris burning regulations this spring
LA GRANDE – During the months of April and May, along with October and November, La Grande city ordinances allow for the controlled burning of yard debris. During the spring yard debris burning period, the La Grande fire department encourages all residents to follow safe burning guidelines and understand what legally can and cannot be burnt as “yard debris.” Recommendations for pre-burning preparations, as posted by the LGFD via social media, are as follows:

LA GRANDE — Island Magic Luau & Show, an event celebrating Pacific Island culture will be conducted Saturday, May 18, at Eastern Oregon University. It will start at 5 p.m. with a dinner at the Hoke Union Building followed by a show at 7 p.m. at McKenzie Theater.
Grande Ronde Hospital Foundation’s Annual Gala Breaks Fundraising Record
LA GRANDE – (Release from the Grande Ronde Hospital Foundation) The Grande Ronde Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce the results of its Then and Now Gala, sponsored by US Bank. The sold-out event took place Saturday, April 6, at Eastern Oregon University’s Loso Hall and raised more than $708,000 including a $674,200 paddle raise appeal. All proceeds go towards the Healthier Together Campaign, which is helping to expand capacity and access at Grande Ronde Hospital and Clinics (GRH).
LHS presents comedic murder mystery
LA GRANDE — La Grande High School invites the community to a spring production of "Out of the Frying Pan" on April 26 and April 27 in the LHS auditorium. The play is a murder mystery but also a "classic comedy," according to the announcement. Written by Francis Swann, the high school production is directed by Robert Gould and McKayla Rollins.
Summer education programs run by the La Grande School District will be cut
LA GRANDE — The sounds of summer will not be as loud as they have been in past years on the education front in La Grande. The La Grande School District has learned it will not receive any funding from the State Learning Grant program in 2024. The Oregon Department of Education has announced that 50 school districts, charter schools and education service districts have automatically qualified for a total of $30 million in state Summer Learning Grant funds, Unfortunately the La Grande School District was not one of automatic qualifiers, according to Vice Superintendent Scott Carpenter.
Restored stained glass windows return to Union
UNION — A portion of Union’s past, after a long journey, is back. Seven stained glass windows that decorated the old Union Methodist Church for more than 100 years, were returned on Tuesday, April 16, after being repaired in Centennial, Colorado, over the course of seven months. The windows, which had long conveyed biblical messages not with words but with the light they captured, were reinstalled on April 17 by a crew from Scottish Stained Glass of Centennial.
Blue Mountains Forest Plan Revision announces public meeting venue change for La Grande, April 25
LA GRANDE – (Release from the U.S. Forest Service) The Malheur, Umatilla, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forests (Blue Mountains) continue to host public meetings that bring awareness and provide an opportunity for the public to engage in the Forest Plan Revision process. Public participation will help the Forest Service to gain local knowledge about existing forest conditions, understand community concerns and resource impacts. New system will allow better tracking of La Grande students on buses
LA GRANDE — La Grande students who take the bus to school may sometime in the next 12 months need a little extra time before boarding and departing. Students who ride buses to school will be issued identification cards that will be scanned or code numbers. If riders are issued cards, a scanner will pick up the signal and log them in and out. If the students are instead provided a code, they will type it in on a computer when getting on and off their bus, allowing it to record where and when they entered or left.
