    Sturgis girls track sets school mark in 800 relay

    STURGIS — Another record was set by the Sturgis track and field team on Tuesday.

    This one came via the girls, where the 800 relay was broken. The team of Tenley Banaszak, Hannah Garbine, Adison Nettleman and Keyanna O'Tey combined to run a new-school record of 1:45.65, breaking the old mark by .38 seconds.

    It was also senior night for the Trojans, who picked up dual matchup victories over Edwardsburg 122-15 and Niles 123-14. Sturgis placed first overall in 14 of 17 events on the evening.

    "It was very emotional to watch our seniors compete at home for the last time prior to the conference meet. All of them competed well, which made this last meet so special," Sturgis coach Lesley Starkey said. "We are now heading into the championship portion of the season; we have 10 days to train and get ready for the conference meet at home. These girls are poised to do something special on May 10 and we hope that many people from the community come to support them."

    O'Tey ran to first in the 100 (12.29 seconds) and Banaszak was second at 13.07 seconds. Angela Cary finishedd third at 13.57. Riley Eicher was first in the 200 at 28.32, Nettleman finished just behind her at 28.34 and Garbine was third at 28.40.

    Winning the 400 was Sydney Bir, she posted a time of 1:03.52. Jacqueline Flores Fontanel was third at 1:06.54.

    Berkley Holtz paced the field in the 800 at 2:45.44, Tessa Hatt came in second at 2:52.83 and Eleanor Park was third at 2:55.92. Holtz also won the mile (5:42.11) and Hatt was second (5:51.14). Park ran to first place in the two-mile run at 13:11.55 and Graycee Cloutier finished second at 13:47.76 while Stephany Cue came in third.

    Kylie Brooks' time of 50.31 seconds won the 300 hurdles.

    Sturgis swept the relays. Banaszak, Cary, Garbine and O'Tey had a time of 50.08 seconds to win the 400. Bir, Eicher, Flores Fontanel and Holtz raced to a time of 4:27.14 to win the mile relay. In the two-mile, the team of Emma Garbine, Kenzie Eicher, Hatt and Bir clocked a time of 12:50.97.

    Eleena Kelley won both the shot put (29-0 feet) and the discus (114-2 feet). Kaylee Draper was second in the shot (26-5) and Nora Naliwajko (26-4.5) was third.

    Draper did claim first in the pole vault, clearing 8-9 feet. Kenzy Triezenberg was second at 8-0 feet.
