Crafted, the Art of the Taco
Originally in the location of Dear Dad’s (across the street), Crafted has been a downtown institution since 2012. The move in 2018 gave the owners an opportunity to double the size of the restaurant to 7,000 sq. ft., evidence of their success. They pride theselves on their creative taco ingredients and it has served them well. Crafted offers indoor seating, covered patio seating, and outdoor seating under an awning. The storefront and interior decors add to the ambience.

Historic Derby Restaurant changes hands
It’s 10 a.m. Thursday and a routine scenario is unfolding at The Derby Restaurant in Bannertown as breakfast customers trickle out and the staff prepares for the lunch crowd lured by that day’s spaghetti special. Yet there is something different in the air this particular morning other than the smell of bacon frying. Upon further review, there is James W. “Jimbo” Pell III standing by his usual spot near the cash register, although the afore-mentioned atypical atmosphere surrounds the third-generation owner of The Derby on this occasion. The reason for that becomes clear, with Thursday being three days removed from the sale of the historic restaurant that had been in Pell’s family for nearly 90 years. “Well, I’m just ready to retire,” Pell said of that move involving the second-oldest restaurant in the Mount Airy area behind only Snappy Lunch downtown. “I’m 63 years old and I’ve been working here for 53 years,” he added in recalling how this started as a bus boy and dishwasher at age 10. “We closed on it Monday,” Pell said of the restaurant property occupying a corner spot at the intersection of South Main Street and N.C. 89-East. Although that was Pell’s last “official”

Albemarle Neighbor: Lucky Penny Coffee Co. brews up a fresh start on wheels
Kelly Heard is brewing up a cup of luck at Lucky Penny Coffee Co. Heard and her husband, Jonas, launched the mobile specialty coffee trailer Oct. 10 at the Planes and Plows Airshow in Currituck. The day was especially meaningful for the couple, who were also celebrating their first wedding anniversary. “It went really well,” Heard said. “I am so grateful for people giving us a chance.” The business takes its name from the couple’s favorite song, Chris Stapleton’s “Starting Over,” which includes a line about a lucky penny. Heard describes the business as an “upscale mobile cafe” serving specialty coffees with unique flavors. One of her personal favorites is the pistachio caramel latte. The cafe also sells canned lattes. In addition to coffee, the cafe offers bagels from Barrier Island Bagels and pastries from The SweetEasy. Heard’s picks include the everything bagel with cream cheese, the quarter-pound cookies and the French macarons. She said it was important to her to work with other local businesses. A New Jersey native, Heard has more than 20 years of experience in the food and beverage industry. She moved to North Carolina six years ago and lives in Camden with her husband, who

But the region missed out on a Star for the second year in a row — Charlotte’s Counter- remains the state’s only starred restaurant . Cheetie Kumar called the recognition “a little surreal” and said Michelin’s arrival in the South was overdue. “It’s odd that the area with the richest food culture in the country wasn’t included in this culinary recognition,” she said. Ideal’s co-owner Ian Bracken said the honor caught the team off guard. “Definitely not

Has the opening date for the Buc-ee's in Mebane changed? Here's what we know
Buc-ee’s is opening in a department store-sized building off Interstate 85/40 in Alamance County. The store will feature more than 100 gas pumps and 650 parking spots, The News & Observer and CharlotteFive previously reported. Buc-ee’s, which sells beaver-branded snacks and touts the cleanliness of its restrooms, originally planned to welcome customers to the new Mebane store in spring 2027. Then in March, the store told The N&O the opening date would be delayed until late 2027. But as of Tuesday, Oct. 21, the travel center lists on its website an estimated 2028 launch. When asked about the discrepancy, a store spokesperson in an email to The N&O said “the opening date has not yet been finalized.” The popular chain has dozens of locations , including in neighboring Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. But the Mebane store could be the first in North Carolina. The store is coming to the city after it withdrew plans for an Orange County location in 2021. Some residents there had expressed concerns about environmental impacts. As construction is underway on the Buc-ee’s in Mebane, the brand is considering another location in the state .
