OAK PARK HEIGHTS — With a nice boost from the top of the lineup and effective pitching, the Stillwater softball team reeled off its fifth win in a row with an 8-0 triumph over Mounds View on Monday, May 13 at Stillwater Area High School.

Forest Lake (15-3 SEC, 15-4) has already wrapped up the conference championship, but the Ponies (12-5, 14-5) can claim second place alone with a victory over Cretin-Derham Hall (12-5, 14-5) in their final regular season game Thursday, May 16.

The loser of that game will slide into a tie for third with White Bear Lake (12-5, 14-6).

“It’s been a good season,” Ponies coach Angie Ryan said. “I feel good about our season and the improvement and playing our best ball at the right time. Hopefully that continues into the section tournament.”

Anna Corbid earned the shutout with a complete game two-hitters as the Ponies blanked Mounds View. She did not walk a batter and finished with three strikeouts.

“Anna has done a real nice job,” Ryan said. “Her change-up has been working really well and has done a really nice job of changing speeds and hitting her spots and keeping hitters off balance.”

Stillwater scored four runs in the second inning and added two more in the third to take control.

Lead-off batter Maya Schroeder continued her impressive play this season with three more hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. The junior center fielder extended an impressive streak while reaching base in 13 consecutive plate appearances over the past three games — drive nine hits and drawing four walks in victories over Mounds View, Maple Grove and Woodbury.

“Maya Schroeder has had an amazing season,” Ryan said. “She’s absolutely outstanding. She can also steal bases and scores a lot of runs. Recently, she’s been pretty unstoppable, and that’s helpful.”

Her production has been important for the team after the graduation of last year’s MVP Alexis Monty, who has also enjoyed a remarkable freshman season this spring at Concordia-St. Paul.

“She hasn’t made an out since the Park game,” Ryan said. “Monty last year was outstanding in that lead-off spot and she’s up for national player of the year this year, so she stood out, but I don’t remember a streak like that.”

Mariah Koren doubled twice and Addison Coffey singled and doubled for the Ponies against Mounds View (3-14, 3-15).

    Stillwater 8, Maple Grove 2

At Oak Park Heights, a four-run first inning helped propel the Ponies to an 8-2 nonconference victory over Maple Grove on Saturday, May 11 at SAHS.

It was a balanced attack for the Ponies with seven players collecting at least one RBI.

“I think our offense has been pretty good all year,” Ponies coach Angie Ryan said. “Not against White Bear Lake and Forest Lake, but outside of that it has been strong all season.“

Anna Corbid also did her part while limiting the Crimson (10-9) to six hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in the complete game.

“When things are going really good it’s often because our pitchers are a little bit sharper,” Ryan said.

Maya Schroeder unloaded a double and home run among her three hits while Addison Coffey singled and doubled for the Ponies, who finished with 10 hits in all.

Sarah Dollerschell also homered for Stillwater.

“We’re coming out strong and attacking,” Ryan said. “Obviously we want to come out and win the first inning and that’s helped set the tone and has made things a little bit easier. We didn’t do that (against Mounds View), but the second inning got things going.”

    Stillwater 10, Woodbury 4

At Woodbury, the Ponies took control early with an eight-run first inning on the way to a 10-4 conference victory over Woodbury on Friday, May 9 at Ojibway Park.

Stillwater batted around in the first, which included a home run from Maya Schroeder on her second at bat. She also singled, doubled and walked twice to finish with three RBIs and three runs scored.

“We scored eight runs in the first and that was pretty much the game,” Ponies coach Angie Ryan said. “We came out really strong. We just kept scoring.”

Sarah Dollerschell and Autumn Lettner each singled and doubled while Amber Buchkoski added two hits and finished with three RBIs.

Anna Corbid allowed two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four innings. Cece Lamey also struck out three in three innings of work for the Ponies.
