STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (TCD) -- A 31-year-old man faces charges after allegedly fatally stabbing his pregnant girlfriend and causing the death of the victim's unborn child over the weekend.

According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Damarion Goler allegedly stabbed 31-year-old Talic Mersina on Sunday, March 24, near the door of their Sterling Heights home. Police were initially called to the home at approximately 3 a.m., where they observed blood, but nobody was there at the time, WJBK-TV reports.

Shortly after, Clinton Township Police received a report of a blood-covered man around 10 miles away, according to WJBK. Officers later found Goler and Mersina in the victim's vehicle in a parking lot outside the defendant's mother's home.

Talic was transported to the hospital, where she died from her stab wounds. The victim's unborn child died as well.

The prosecutor's office charged Goler with second-degree murder and assault of a pregnant individual –– intentionally causing miscarriage. He was also charged with tampering with evidence and concealing the death of an individual. If he is convicted of second-degree murder or assault, he could face up to life in prison.

Goler reportedly appeared in court for his arraignment on Wednesday, March 27, and was remanded to the Macomb County Jail without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 3.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said, "The defendant allegedly chose to take the life of his pregnant girlfriend, someone who trusted and loved him. Justice demands that he face the consequences of his crimes. These acts are not merely crimes against individuals but against the very fabric of humanity itself."
