Grammy nominees have local ties
For consecutive years, eastern North Carolina daughters have attracted attention for their outstanding work, receiving nominations for one of the music industry’s highest honors: a Grammy award. The news is surely no surprise to those who have been following the trajectory of Christie Dashiell, who grew up in Greenville, and Marianna Evans, or “Rapsody,” with roots in Snow Hill. Dashiell is an acclaimed jazz vocalist, composer and faculty member at Howard University. Locals remember her as the progeny of former ECU Director of Jazz Ensembles Carroll Dashiell Jr. She attended Elmhurst Elementary, E.B. Aycock Middle School and J.H. Rose High School, where she was active in choir, orchestra and jazz band. In 2025 she received a Grammy nomination for her vocal jazz album, “Journey in Black.” This year she received the nod for her third album, “We Insist 2025!” in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Album. In a Washington Post feature, Sophia Solana described it as a “revived civil rights album,” saying that Dashiell “sings her resistance.” Announcing the nomination, Howard University posted, “Christie Dashiell stands at the musical crossroads of jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel, and soul. Known for her improvisational command and her unmistakably rich, clear tone,

Donna Davis: Listen to the Musick
Washington musician Adam Musick said he had two dreams in life: One was to play music for a living and the other was to raise food, living off the land. He has done both, and his relaxed performance style and easy-going engagement with audiences convey a comfort in one’s own skin that fulfillment of dreams likely brings. The path that brought him to Washington was circuitous, but Musick describes it as serendipitous. Being a musician with a last name of “Musick,” he’s bound to know a thing or two about happy coincidences. “I grew up in the southwestern part of Virginia, in a little town called Abingdon,” Musick said. “Both of my parents are musicians. Not by profession, although my mom was a professional actress and a singer. My dad was a chiropractor, but they’re very musical people. So I grew up around music.” He remembers getting his first guitar for his ninth birthday. His parents had divorced, but got together to present him an electric guitar and tiny amp. His dad taught him the guitar first and, about two years later, he moved with his mother and sister to Williamsburg, Virginia. He saw his father every other weekend and
