Ride the Rockies is a huge kick for both riders and spectators.

I've been up to Indy Pass once to watch the spectacle and the one time it came through town. Two thousand (or more) thundering bicycles. It's something of an event, something of a statement.

This year, it's taking a route that doesn't really sound like the Rockies, but it is.

It'll start in Steamboat Springs and run through Craig, Meeker, and Rangely en route to Fruita—a well-loved cycling town.

The bicycle route is more than 400 miles long and the event runs June 9–15. This year, more than 2,000 riders are expected, along with their support teams.

It's a hoot to just watch, or you can get involved by going here .

Here's a fun welcome from representatives of the communities cyclists will be riding through:

Now, let's go skiing.
