This Year’s Happy Valley Mom of the Year Has Helped Thousands to Breastfeeding Breakthroughs
It was well over a year ago when State College veterinarian Erin Hartzler sent me a recommendation. According to Hartzler, I should choose a woman named Karen Foard as my “Mother of the Year” for 2023. And indeed, this suggestion was a great one. As I knew then and know much better now, Karen Foard is a heroine in the world of breastfeeding. A conservative estimate suggests she has counseled more than 5,000 women—mostly in one-to-one-plus-baby sessions—and provided a remarkable range of medical insights and emotional support. There was just one “problem” with Hartzler’s idea. Unbeknownst to her, I had already begun...

Calder Way in downtown State College, and veteran local bar owners Chris Rosengrant and Mike Fullington will be taking over the space, Rosengrant confirmed to Onward State on Thursday. Jax opened in 2018, replacing the Darkhorse Tavern. It was known for its sports trivia and sex trivia night, complete with corresponding drinks. It also offered specials like “Wine Wednesday,” “Fireball Friday,” and more. Rosengrant is the owner of the Lion’s Den at 118 S. Garner St. in State College. Rosengrant confirmed that the Den will not be moving to the Jax location, but that he and Fullington, who has been an owner of The Phyrst, will create a new bar. “It’ll be a really cool addition to State College,” Rosengrant said. Rosengrant added the Jax location will be renovated and rebranded. The bar that will take over the space does not have a brand at this point, though updates are expected closer to June.
