STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — State College has implemented the No Mow May initiative for residents. It allows everyone to let the grass on their lawn grow without cutting it for a month to promote pollination.

The increased growth attracts pollinators like bees, which are important for the springtime.

“It’s a crucial month as this spring comes and the bees are out flying because it’s warm and there’s not that many things that are in bloom yet,” Claudia Wilson, a beekeeper in Bellefonte, said.

While No Mow May is active in State College, not every borough in the surrounding area is on board. Places like Bellefonte have not endorsed the initiative, but that has not stopped residents like Wilson from trying to participate. She has found a way to let her lawn grow while still staying up to code.

“I can let my front yard grow to a certain height,” Wilson said. “I can mow it high, you know, so that I can still adhere to the regulations.”

To participate in this program, residents are required to register their address by May 10 by either completing an online form or by registering in person at the State College Borough Municipal Building.

While some may worry that the long grass will look bad or attract ticks, Wilson said that it is still crucial to attract pollinators.

“Without pollinators, generally, our food supply would collapse,” Wilson said.
