How Once Gene Sarazen Protected Himself From an Intruder With the Most Golfing Weapon Present
Seven-time major champion Gene Sarazen had wielded a driver countless times throughout his illustrious career. But on this occasion, he had no intention of hitting a tee shot. Back in 1935, just before the Masters, ‘The Squire’ arrived in Augusta, Georgia, and checked into the Bon Air Hotel downtown. However, he never imagined his hotel stay would turn into a confrontation with an intruder. The night before the first round, Sarazen went to bed early, hoping to wake up refreshed. However, at 4 a.m., that hope shattered when he was jolted awake by the sound of his hotel room door opening, only t...

James Brown's name returns to Augusta's new entertainment complex
The new Augusta Entertainment Complex will be named for music legend and Augusta native James Brown. The Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority voted Tuesday unanimously to name the rebuilt performance venue for the Grammy-winning performer remembered as "the Godfather of Soul" and "the Hardest Working Man in Show Business," the authority announced. Apples and oranges: Augusta Dollar General adds produce in a city with food deserts "James Brown was more than a musical legend. He was Augusta’s own, and he never forgot where he came from,” said Cedric Johnson, chairman of the Coliseum Authority, in prepared remarks. "His music changed the world, but his heart was always here in Augusta. As we prepare to open a world-class entertainment destination, we couldn’t think of a more fitting way to honor his extraordinary life and legacy." Custom installations and displays inside the new arena will further honor Brown, according to the authority. The naming is subject to approval by Primary Wave, the music publishing and marketing company that acquired the singer's estate and his music catalog in December 2021 for an estimated $90 million. The community held its breath for more than a year after Johnson told the Augusta Commission in July 2025

John Daly has a new Masters week deal in Augusta after longtime Hooters tradition
John Daly’s Masters-week tradition in Augusta isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s getting bigger. Topgolf announced a multi-year partnership with the two-time major champion that will bring Daly back to its Augusta, Georgia, location during Masters week in 2027 and 2028, extending a relationship that began with his appearances there in 2026. It’s the latest chapter in Daly’s long-running connection to Augusta, one that took an unexpected turn when the city’s Hooters closed. For years, Daly was practically as much a part of Masters week as the traffic on Washington Road. He regularly set up shop at the Augusta Hooters , selling merchandise, signing autographs and taking photos with fans. According to ESPN, Daly made nearly $800,000 during Masters week in 2024. That tradition appeared to be in jeopardy when Hooters closed more than 30 company-owned restaurants, including its Augusta location. The company filed for bankruptcy in March 2025 after accumulating $376 million in debt and later moved toward a franchise-only business model. But Daly quickly found another landing spot. Augusta television station WRDW reported that Top Dawg Tavern, located almost directly across the street from the former Hooters where Daly once parked his RV, would host him during Masters

Ussery/Davenport split prizes in South Carolina Open 9-Ball at Rack & Grill III in Aiken, SC
Not that the $3,000-added, South Carolina Open 9-Ball event that drew 53 entrants to Rack & Grill III in Aiken, SC over this past weekend (Sat., Oct. 17-18) was without its strong menu of competitors with top-notch matches to watch. But for a minute there, it looked as though Tommy Kennedy and Johnny Archer might get together to recreate their two matches (hot seat and final) at the US Open 9-Ball Championships in Chesapeake, VA, about one month over 34 years ago (Sept. 16-20, 1992). Kennedy won both matches and chalked up his one and only US Open win. The bracket for the SC Open 9-Ball set them up on opposite ends, which would have made their first possible meet-up the battle for the hot seat and the second, the event final.
