Contractor to begin replacing U.S. 21 bridge over I-77 in Jonesville
JONESVILLE — An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor soon will begin replacing a 62-year-old bridge in Yadkin County. Crews from Blythe Construction Inc., of Charlotte, will spend the next three years replacing the 62-year-old bridge on U.S. 21 over Interstate 77 in Jonesville between Wilkins Road and Little Mountain Road. Construction begins this week, with crews clearing the worksite and installing erosion control measures as they prepare to build the new bridge adjacent to the existing structure. The project also includes replacing and relocating water and sewer lines, building a new culvert to carry a small creek under U.S. 21 and, once the bridge is finished, reconstructing the ramps between I-77 and U.S. 21. The $16.5 million contract calls for construction to finish in summer 2029. The contract only allows lane closures on I-77 during nighttime hours, and lane closures on U.S. 21 are not permitted during morning rush hour.
