North Fork Casino Stays Open as Judge Rejects Chukchansi Tribe’s Emergency Bid
Construction officially began in 2024, with a reported $725 million price tag. A federal judge in Fresno has refused to grant Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians an order that would have forced North Fork Mono Casino to pause operations. This will leave the new Madera property open while the dispute moves towards the Ninth Circuit.

Fresno road to close for three weeks next month. Here are recommended workarounds
North Avenue from Cedar Avenue to Highway 99 will close to traffic for the first three weeks of November, the City of Fresno announced Thursday. The closure will be in place 24/7 for sewer main rehabilitation beginning Nov. 2 and is expected to continue through Nov. 20. Traffic will detour to Central Avenue. Additional closures will follow as construction progresses, and driver should expect delays in the area, the city said in a press release Thursday. Drivers traveling on southbound Highway 99 are recommended by the city to use Jensen or Central Avenue for destinations east of Highway 99. Drivers on northbound Highway 99 are recommended to use Central or Jensen for destinations west of Highway 99. The Cedar and North Avenue exit may still be used for destinations east of the 99. “Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternate routes or expect delays. Schedule is pending weather or unforeseen delays,” the release said.

Where a Juvenile Hall Once Stood, Area 1 Candidates Make Their Case
On October 10, I went to Farber Educational Campus with a recorder in my handbag and a bit of election season cynicism. Many election forums can seem similar. This location is far from typical. Farber, Fresno Unified’s roughly $65 million alternative education campus, sits on the former Fresno County Juvenile Hall, which closed in 2006 and was torn down in 2019. Walking in, I felt that this space had not yet completely forgotten its past. Somewhere under the brand-new paint and career pathway banners this old land still seemed to be listening, wondering what the grownups would say about kids now. On the other hand, I also saw a monument to progress. Ever since I was a teenager, I have advocated against the school-to-prison pipeline, and this was a visceral representation of my goals, especially since the demolition lined up with my own senior year of high school.
