Porterville Probationer Arrested on Litany of New Charges
February 16, 2024 / 1:00 P.M. Joshua Schwenn, 34 years old, Porterville resident. On February 16, 2024, at 1:05 P.M., detectives from the Porterville Police Department observed a previously reported stolen vehicle parked unoccupied at a residence in the sub-100 block of East Yates Avenue. Shortly later, Joshua Schwenn arrived in a separate vehicle and entered the previously reported stolen vehicle. Detectives attempted to contact Schwenn and he fled from them on foot; however, he was apprehended without further incident.
Porterville Police Department Makes Significant Arrests in Methamphetamine Trafficking Operation
Driving While Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. February 17, 2024 / 8:03 P.M. Alejandro Vasquez, 28 years old, Porterville resident. On February 17, 2024, at 8:03 P.M., detectives with the Porterville Police Department conducted a traffic enforcement stop of a vehicle in the 500 block of East Date Avenue. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Bertha Rivera. Rivera was determined to be driving with a suspended license and she was required to have an ignition interlock device installed in her vehicle. Furthermore, detectives determined that Rivera was under the influence of a controlled substance. A search of Rivera’s vehicle revealed her to be in possession of methamphetamine possessed for sales and transported for sales. Rivera, a previously convicted felon, was also found to be in possession of narcotic paraphernalia and pepper spray.

A significant majority of these cases, 78 to be precise, were classified as 'Other', which could include a range of minor offenses or incidents requiring police attention. More serious crimes included 3 shootings, 2 arrests, 1 theft, and 1 suspicious situation. Although the number of shootings might raise concerns, it should be noted that these incidents constituted only about 3.5% of the total reported crimes. The number of arrests made is also relatively low, representing just over 2% of the total cases. The single reported theft and suspicious situation cases accounted for just over 1% each of the total crime count. These figures indicate that the place is relatively peaceful, with serious crimes being the exception rather than the norm. However, the authorities need to maintain vigilance to ensure the safety and security of the residents.
