CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Parts of western Massachusetts got into the low 80s on Thursday but there is cooler weather on the way for the weekend and a chance for rain.

New England seeing more frequent and heavy downpours

Temperatures have been above average the past few days with Springfield hitting 81 degrees on Thursday. This is because we had high pressure in the south that was lifting the jet stream and allowing warm air to be pumped in from the south.

Changes are on the way for the weekend though. As this area of high pressure exits to the east, temperatures will go down into the weekend, and also the chance for showers on Sunday. This is because low pressure will be moving in from the west behind this high pressure and will cause the jet stream to dip giving cool and unsettled weather.

So far, this year looking at rainfall, there has been 19 inches of rain and the yearly average is 44.4 inches. Most of the rain so far this year came in February and March.
