SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Scholarships were awarded Tuesday night to young scholars for their essays and research, relating to STEM developments made by Black and African American contributors.

Eastman hosted the Third Annual Black History Oratorical Contest this evening at Western New England University. It featured four seniors from Springfield Sci-Tech, who intend to pursue a STEM degree.

Students submitted an essay with an objective, to develop a deeper understanding of the important role that these contributors played in advancing STEM. Students presented and shared their findings to a panel of 7 judges.

“A great opportunity for us as a potential future employer to get to know the students but to also show the students like how their studies and contest could play into their future careers and development, so we’re very excited about it,” said Eastman Site Manager, Dennis Van Nevel.

Nearly $4,000 worth of scholarships were given out by the Eastman Foundation. City Council Vice President, Melvin Edward’s also attended the event.
