Springfield police seize loaded rifle, two men arrested

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) detectives conducted an operation on Saturday resulting in the seizure of a loaded rifle and the arrest of two suspects.
According to police, on April 27th, around 6:25 p.m., detectives observed what they believed to be a drug deal near the intersection of Layzon Brothers Road and Goodwin Street.
While one vehicle involved managed to leave the scene, detectives intercepted the second vehicle after it stopped at a convenience store on Pasco Road. Police detained the occupants of the vehicle. The driver, identified as 27-year-old Elijah Muhammad , of Springfield, and the rear seat passenger, identified as 22-year-old Adam Battles , of Ludlow.
Detectives noticed a rifle in an open duffel bag in the back seat and discovered additional ammunition and marijuana inside the vehicle.
Adam Battles faces the following charges:
Carrying a Loaded Shotgun/Rifle on a Public Way
Carrying a Firearm without a License
Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card
Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
Elijah Muhammad faces the following charges:
Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License
Possession with the Intent to Distribute a Class D Drug
Conspiracy to Violate Drug Law
The seizure marks the SPD FIU’s 36th illegal firearm confiscation of the year, contributing to the department’s total of 88 illegal firearms seized. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Springfield Police Department.
