Popular fast-food restaurant returning to Springfield while new dining concept opens
Wendy’s signature square burgers will be returning to 1250 Toronto Road this summer, according to a corporate spokesperson. The Springfield location closed in February along with a dozen sister sites owned by Florida-based Starboard Group after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Nov. 14. These closures include Wendy’s in Quincy and Hannibal, Mo., both of which closed in early January.
Newly opened Springfield restaurant serves up hot, fresh food with good service
Address: 3028 E. Stanford Ave. My order: I had the Shrimp Chimichanga ($17.50), a flour tortilla filled with sautéed shrimp, onions, bell peppers and mushrooms. It was topped with queso dip and served with lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, rice and beans. The dish came out steaming hot; the tortilla was crispy, and it had plenty of shrimp inside. My friend ordered the Pollo Fundido ($15.50), a deep-fried flour tortilla stuffed with shredded chicken, covered with two cheeses and served with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, rice and beans. This, too, was freshly cooked. My friend especially liked the white-meat chicken, which had no gristle or inedible pieces.

Cicada broods crossing over in Illinois for the first time in 200 years
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — This summer will be a lot noisier than usual. That's because two cicada broods are emerging at the same time — and the same place. Central Illinois will see a crossover between two groups of cicadas in mid to late May. One group comes out to mate after 13 years underground and the other after 17 years. The broods emerging this year, Brood XIII in northern Illinois and Brood XIX in southern Illinois and throughout the South, haven't come out at the same time since 1803.
