Summer Underground Railroad Tours Start Today
Beginning today, Historic Gettysburg-Adams County (HGAC) in cooperation with the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom (NTF) Program will be providing tours of Gettysburg’s only officially recognized Underground Railroad site where hundreds of freedom-seekers were sheltered during their escape from slavery in the years before the Civil War.

Dreamwrights presents “Sweat” by Lynn Nottage under the direction of Cal Weary from May 3rd to May 11th. The York community will enjoy this deeply moving 2017 Pulitzer Prize winning play with it’s familiar Reading, PA setting. American playwright, Lynn Nottage, is a professor at Columbia University and the first and only female recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama. “Sweat” was originally performed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2015 before it moved off broadway in 2016 and then Broadway in 2017.
Gettysburg Brass Band Festival JAZZ AL FRESCO featuring the Darden Purcell Group
Darden Purcell, a Washington D.C. vocalist, will be the featured artist at the Gettysburg Brass Band Festival Jazz al Fresco benefit concert on Thursday, June 6. Darden has shared the stage with leading jazz artists Maria Schneider, Eric Alexander, Terell Stafford, Eddie Daniels, Jim Pugh, Chip McNeill, Chuchito Valdes, Alan Baylock, Byron Stripling, Joel Spencer, and Darmon Meader, and has been a solo vocalist with the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, U.S. Navy Commodores, Airmen of Note. And Army Blues. Dr. Purcell is also Director of Jazz Studies, and director of the Downbeat award-winning Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble at George Mason University.
BarnArt 2024: Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Rural Icons
The HGAC BarnArt Show & Sale will take place at the G.A.R. Hall on 53 East Middle Street in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The event is free to attend and open to the public. The Opening Night Reception is scheduled for Friday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., with awards announced at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition continues on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 9, from noon to 4 p.m.
