Chargers Softball Wins 2024 Mazzola Classic Over East Brunswick

The Mazzola Classic troohy remains in Spotswood for another year thanks to the Chargers 6-1 victory over East Brunswick High School.

SPOTSWOOD, NJ - It was an exciting Friday night at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field. Friday was the Chargers annual Youth Softball Night and the 2024 Mazzola Classic. For the second straight spring, the trophy will stay in Spotswood. The Chargers defeated East Brunswick High School 6-1 behind the pitching of Ava Mormile.

The Mazzola Classic is played in memory of Ron Mazzola. Mazzola passed away suddenly in February 2022. He was an institution in high school sports since he first began coaching in the Old Bridge Soccer League at the age of 17. Mazzola was inducted posthumously into the Spotswood Athletic Hall of Fame as a contributor in October 2022. The Chargers won the 2023 Mazzola Classic over East Brunswick with a one-hit shutout by Mormile.

Mormile went the distance for the Chargers on Friday, giving up one run on five hits and striking out 13. Jocelyn Nazario also went the distance for the Bears, pitching six innings and giving up six runs on three hits and striking out four.

Hannah Graulich had a single and an RBI. Juliana Ziegler hit a single. Ziegler had an RBI and scored a run. Mormile also hit a single. Delanie DiStefano, Gabrielle Hill, Sasha Soffer and Isabella Vitale all scored a run for the Chargers. Eva Munoz, Gabrielle Nieves, Maria Rampolla, Arianna DeMaio and D'Liah Kercado had hits for East Brunswick.

Spotswood's victory improved the Chargers' overall season record to 12-2 and completed the season sweep over East Brunswick. Friday's victory gave the Chargers sole possession of first place in the Greater Middlesex Conference's White Division. The two teams both had 6-1 division records going into Friday's game and were tied for first place. Spotswood is the defending White Division champs.

The Chargers return to the field on Monday when the team hosts South Plainfield High School. South Plainfield has an overall record of 9-2. Game time is at 4 p.m. at the Spotswood High School Varsity Softball Field.
